SHOW REPORT:

Welcome by Bob Caudle and David Crockett

- - David Crockett explains situation with Mid-Atlantic champ Jack Brisco and Roddy Piper, who currently has possession of the Mid-Atlantic belt. Piper stole the belt, but Brisco is officially the champion. The NWA has been fining Piper $1000 a day until he returns the belt. Finally, an agreement was made earlier that afternoon that if Brisco would come up with $10,000 (ostensibly for Piper to recoup what he has had to pay in fines), Piper would give the belt to an official assigned by the NWA, and Piper and Brisco would wrestle on TV, the winner to be Mid-Atlantic champion and to be awarded both the belt and the $10,000.

David Crockett: "Mr. Brisco had to come up with cash, you wouldn't accept a check..."

Roddy Piper: "No checks in Scotland, no."

Interview - Piper comes out and turns the belt over to David Crockett, who gives him the money from Brisco. Piper counts the money only to find the money is short of the ten grand. Piper, enraged, grabs back the belt, but doesn't want to give the money back since he feels like he was going to be swindled, an angry David Crockett telling him that's Brisco's money, and if he's calling off the match, then give back the money. Wahoo McDaniel and Ricky Steamboat come out and tell Piper that Brisco was caught short on the holiday when the banks were closed (I guess it was an unannounced July 7 holiday) and Brisco had put up $6,000, and they would each put up an additional $2,000 each to make the $10,000. Piper recounts the money, then finally agrees to give NWA official Stu Shwartz the belt as well as hold his money through the match. Piper then demands one additional stipulation - - that Wahoo and Steamboat be barred from ringside and if they enter the studio that he will automatically win the Mid-Atlantic title.

Interview - Roddy Piper continues to rant and rave until David Crockett comes out and tells Piper to get in the ring and wrestle.

[★] Mid-Atlantic Championship: Jack Brisco vs. Roddy Piper

- - A long, tense, excellent battle between the two. In the end Piper pulls a roll of coins from his trunks and nails Brisco with it and referee Sonny Fargo makes the count despite coins littering the ring. Brisco is knocked unconscious. WHen questioned about the money in the ring, Piper claims fans through it in the ring.

Valentine even challenges NWA champion Ric Flair who he reminds that he broke his nose years back... "more dirty laundry."

What a stable Sir Oliver Humperdink had in the Mid-Atlantic area in July of 1982. The House of Humperdink included at that time:

The Ninja may have also been a member as well, not sure. I'm enjoying watching these old shows as they air on WWE Classics On Demand and had forgotten what a juggernaut the House of Humperdink was at that time.

Tapes are shown from recent TV of: (1) Piper injures Jerry Brisco (2) Piper attempts to put Jack out with chair during his match with Muraco.

[ ] Jack Brisco (MA) / Ricky Steamboat defeat Matt Borne / Steve Seibert wen Steamboat pins Seibert after a combination top rope chop/ belly to back suplex. Amazing work between Matt Borne and Ricky Steamboat, including some beautiful signature arm-drags by Steamboat.

[●] Jake Roberts defeats Roddy Piper by DQ. Color commentary by Ricky Steamboat. A brutal match. Piper is particularly aggressive early on, but Roberts makes a good comeback. Sgt. Slaughter interferes by tripping Roberts as he attempts a knee lift and Piper is disqualified.

Wahoo McDaniel was injured and in the hospital and when he failed to show for a title defense against Slaughter, the title was given to Slaughter by the NWA due to the 30 day trial rule where there must always be a winner.

[ ] Sgt. Slaughter (US) defeats Steve Seibert with the cobra clutch. Wahoo will be out of the hospital "tomorrow". Discussion of how Slaughter came by the US title.

[●] Jack Brisco (MA) defeats Don Muraco by DQ following interference by Roddy Piper. Color commentary by Roddy Piper, who is very cold and subdued. Bob Caudle makes a point of noticing this. beautiful armdrags by Brisco, a signature move for Brisco throughout his career. Muraco puts Brisco in the figure four, and Brisco reverses it (using the reversal first devised by Don Muraco years ago in Florida. Piper tries to hit Brisco with a chair, but barely misses, then he and Muraco brutally double team him. Paul Jones and Jimmy Valiant eventually make the save.

Classic old school finish in the Brisco/Jones tag match with a butterfly suplex by Brisco and the football tackle/indian deathlock sequence. Very 1975!
Bob Caudle introduces Nelson as "Sgt. Nelson" but Kernodle as "Pvt. Kernodle." I'm sure Noodle loved that! :-)
Excellent color commentary by Don Muraco during Wahoo's Muraco. H says that Wahoo originally came to Hawaii looking for King Curtis because he was broke and wanted free tickets to the Luau. When he couldn't find him, he heard Muraco was on the island and decided to ask him to be his tag team partner in the NWA world tag team titles. So Muraco says he packs his clothes and takes his pregnant wife and brings her to the Mid-Atlantic area. But then Wahoo got interested in "shiny things" like the US title belt, and lost interest in pursuing the tag titles. All fo a sudden Muraco says he is on the part of the card that says "…and three other matches." He's no longer in the main events and no longer making main event money. (Sounds like a shoot!) Says Wahoo didn't let him down, he just out and out lied to him. Mentions that the Funk Brothers were in the western division of the world tag team tournament. Throws a fit when Caudle calls him "Don." Wants to be called "Magnificent" Muraco.
Wahoo says he watches TV, and sees Muraco wrestling in other areas (Georgia) and glad he's making money. He understands, so Muraco should understand Wahoo's commitments with the U.S. title.

One I've been waiting for.

It appears that one of the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling shows I've really been wanting to see will finally be showing up on WWE Classics on Demand. It is the episode taped 7/7/82 and it is scheduled to debut on 5/18/11.

This is the show where Roddy Piper defeated Jack Brisco for the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight championship. It's not that this match itself is that rare. It appeared on the WWE Roddy Piper DVD release, and has appeared on the WWE Classics channel before as part of a Hall of Fame package. It's on YouTube, I'm sure.But that was just the match itself; I've always wanted the whole show. Part of what makes that match special is all the stuff leading up to it, including Piper's classic interaction with Wahoo McDaniel, Ricky Steamboat, and referee Stu Shwartz. And, especially as time goes by, I enjoy seeing entire shows, and the perspective on events that comes along with that.

The show is a highlight of an amazing year for Jack Brisco on Mid-Atlantic Wrestling, where he had great TV matches with Piper, Don Muraco, Ric Flair, and Paul Jones during that year, all of which were excellent.

While we continue to catch up with reports on shows that have aired while we were on hiatus, another show has aired on WWE Classics on Demand and we offer a summary from Gateway contributor Brian Rogers.

Mid-Atlantic Wrestling 6.30.82

Bob welcomes us to another outstanding week of matches. Roddy Piper joins Bob to discuss his feud with Jack Brisco and his taking the Mid-Atlantic belt. Piper shows us a video of his buddy from Hawaii Don Muraco in action and then an interview with Muraco. Back in the studio,Piper challenges Brisco and Steamboat to take on he and Muraco. Oliver Humperdink then joins Bob to say he is here to check out the great talent in the Mid-Atlantic area.

Our first match is Angelo Mosca vs Jay Youngblood. SOH joins Bob for commentary this week on all the matches. Youngblood starts strong and uses the headlock to try and wear down the bigger Mosca. Angelo comes back with the bearhug and works on Youngblood's back. A great back and forth battle between the two. Mosca gets DQ'd by using Youngblood's hair to continuously slam Jay's head into the mat. Steamboat hits the ring to help Jay. Mosca goes to the podium and has some words for Steamboat in the ring.

Our next match is Greg Valentine in action returning to the area. The "Hammer" dominates the match and gets the win with the suplex and big elbow. Steve Seibert and David Patterson join Bob to discuss various issues going on in the area. Next match features Seibert and Patterson as they go up against Wahoo McDaniel and Paul Jones. Jones gets the victory with the Indian death lock. Back from break and Piper has joined Bob again with the stolen Mid-Atlantic belt and taunts Brisco some more. Sgt Slaughter then joins Bob and has some comments for Wahoo. Piper and Valentine come to the podium and Valentine says he is back and ready for all kinds of action.

Back from break and in the ring is Roddy Piper in action. Piper dominates and gets the win with the big suplex. Back at the podium,Bill White joins Bob and says Piper just sent a message to Brisco and discusses his upcoming match with Steamboat. After break,we see the matchup between Steamboat and White. Ricky gets the win in a very good match with lots of back and forth action. Jay Youngblood,Wahoo,and Steamboat join Bob for some comments to close out this weeks episode.

New U.S. Champion Wahoo McDaniel

Host Bob Caudle introduces the new U.S. Champion Chief Wahoo McDaniel, who admits that winning the U.S. title has complicated his bid for the world tag titles with partner Don Muraco. Don comes out and says he is very frustrated with Wahoo's commitments for his new U.S. title becasue he moved his family here from the west coast with one thing on his mind only - to win the NWA world tag team titles. He then walks off. Wahoo says he hopes he can smooth things out because he and Muraco have become good friends.

Muraco expresses his dipleasure over Wahoo's US title win.

[ ] Wahoo McDaniel (U.S.)/Don Muraco defeat Juan Renosa/Bill White

This is the match where Muraco turns on Wahoo. During the match Sgt. Slaughter comes out to ringside trying to distract Wahoo. Wahoo goes for the pin following a big chop on Bill White, but Sarge pulls White under the ropes breaking the count. White gains advantage on Wahoo who finally makes a needed tag to Muraco. As Wahoo climbs through the ropes to the outside apron, Sarge takes off his belt and hits Wahoo with it. Wahoo goes after Sarge and chases him out of the studio. Shortly thereafter, Muraco goes to the corner to make a tag, but Wahoo isn't there. White and Renosa continue to work over Muraco who is at this point desperately fighting both men. Wahoo returns to the ring, and Muraco finally angily makes the tag, and then walks out of the studio himself leaving Wahoo to White and Renosa, who brutalize Wahoo for several minutes. Finally Wahoo lands the big chop on White coming off of the ropes and gets the pin, but is very angry and suprised that Muraco left him.

It will be a "World Series" best of seven for the finals of the tournament A site for the finals has not been selected. Sandy Scott will announce the first four cities in the Best of Seven.

Jake says the match that should have continued this week between he and partner Johnny Weaver vs. The Privates will not take place because Weaver and the Privates are all out of the country. (Really?)

[ ] Wahoo McDaniel and Don Muraco defeat Gary Moore and Steve Seibert when Wahoo pins Seibert following a chop.
Commentary by Roddy Piper. Piper claims Wahoo, Muraco, and Piper are afraid to get in the ring with him.

Sonny Fargo tells the Briscos only one can wrestle against Russo.

Interview - Jack and Jerry Brisco prepare to wrestle in a tag match. Referee Sonny Fargo interrupts to let the Briscos know that Tony Russo's partner did not show up and that one of them could wrestle Russo in a singles match. Jerry says that he has not been in the area for awhile, so he will wrestle Russo. Jack remains to do color commentary with Bob.

[ ] Jerry Brisco defeats Tony Russo by submission with a figure four leglock.
Jack is doing color commentary. During the match, David Crockett comes out and tells Jack that he has a phone call, and Jack leaves the podium. After Russo submits to the figure four, Roddy Piper runs in, climbs to the top of the turnbuckle and jumps off on Russo and Brisco while they are still in the figure four position, injuring both men. Paul Jones, Jake Roberts, and Ron Ritchie make the save. Jack then re-enters the studio to check on Jerry. Clearly, the phone call was a ruse to get Jack Brisco to leave the studio.

[ ] Carl "Pretty Boy" Fergi defeated Mike Davis after a back breaker. Commentary by Wahoo McDaniel.
Wahoo says Jerry Brisco's knee is "tore up bad" and if Jack needs a partner, he's available. Bob and Wahoo discuss the whole situation about Piper injuring Jerry's knee. Wahoo played pro-football for years and saw many knee injuries, and they never came back.

Incessant talk of the NWA trial ruling where matches must end in a pinfall or submission. No DQ.

Mid-Atlantic Wrestling 6.23.82

This episode opens with Bob Caudle welcoming us to an outstanding week of wrestling. Jack Brisco and a recently returned from Japan Ricky Steamboat join Bob for comments. Brisco says Rick has his back in his reoccuring problems with Piper and Muraco. We see film of Jerry Brisco in action and Piper jumping on Jerry as he had the figure four applied on his opponent and then we see Piper and Muraco attack Jack during one of his matches. Steamboat says words of these attacks reached him in Japan on his recent tour. Ricky says he has Jack's back anytime he needs him.

This weeks first match features tag-team action featuring Brisco and Steamboat,who look great in a well earned victory.

Back from break and our next match is Roddy Piper vs Jake Roberts. Steamboat joins Bob on commentary for the action. A physical and intense matchup with Piper busting open the already bandaged foreheard of Jake Roberts. Roberts with a nice flurry of comeback moves until Sgt Slaughter appears at ringside and trips Roberts. Steamboat hits the ring to keep Slaughter and Piper at bay. Referee Sonny Fargo gives the victory to Roberts via DQ.

The Privates, Nelson and Kernodle, join Bob at the podium and announce they are the new Mid-Atlantic tag team champions. They state they will sign a contract to face Steamboat and Brisco anytime and that the belts will stay around their waste a long time.

Jimmy Valiant is next up in singles action and gets a win with the elbow smash.

Back at the podium, Sgt Slaughter and his "recruits", the privates join Bob. Slaughter tells the privates to listen to him and they will keep the belts a long time and he dismisses them. Piper then joins Sarge along with the Ninja. Sarge has some comments on sticking together and then Roddy is vintage with his comments toward Brisco and Steamboat.

Next in the ring,we have six-man action with Sarge and the Privates taking on Mike Rotondo, Kelly Kiniski, and Mike Davis. Very good match with Slaughter getting the pin on Davis with the clothesline. Kiniski and Rotondo join Bob for comments on the match and the Steamboat situation.

Back from break and we have tag action with Wahoo McDaniel and Jay Youngblood teaming up in a very physical and dominant victory.

At the podium Paul Jones joins Bob and has some comments for Angelo Mosca. He tells him he will meet him anywhere, anytime. Jack Brisco joins them with the Mid-Atlantic belt in hand and he has some comments directed at Roddy Piper regarding the belt. He states there is no way he is giving it up after all the pain and suffering he has been through.

Bob tells us "So long for now".

SHOW REPORT:

David Crockett announces that the Eastern Division winners are Ole Anderson and Stan Hansen and they will meet Western Division winners Wahoo McDaniel and Don Muraco in a best-of-seven series in seven different cities for the World Tag Team championship. The cities will be announced shortly.

Sandy Scott presents Jack Brisco the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight title belt. Jack won the title from Roddy Piper on Monday 5.10.82.

Piper interrupts the proceedings and is completely out of control, angry over having lost the title. Brisco, returning the favor of a couple weeks back when Piper brought out a mini-teepee for Jack, brought Piper a big lollipop – “This is for you, sucker.”

Tim Horner, who Bob Caudle pointed out had seen the match in Greenville, told Piper if anyone deserved to get his can kicked, it was him. Piper went nuts and attacked Horner, who fought back but was then double teamed by Piper and Ivan Koloff. David Crockett went in to break it up and took a nasty shot from Piper as well.

Interview – Jack Brisco and Don Muraco. Sandy Scott announces that the NWA is conducting an experimental program and it will be in the Mid-Atlantic area. All matches must end in a pinfall or submission. There will be no disqualifications in matches. Very odd.

[ ] Ron Richie pinned Jim Dalton after executing a perfect power slam.

This show did not air on WWE Classics on Demand!

As with several other shows in the current sequence, this program did not air on WWE Classics on Demand. Speculation is that some of the original master tapes in the Crockett Promotions library were damaged or missing. There is always the chance that WWE decided not to air this show for some reason, but that seems highly unlikely.

It is really too bad this show didn’t air. Bob Caudle promised on the previous week’s show (4.28.82) that we would see video from Georgia Championship Wrestling of the incident where Roddy Piper whipped Tommy Rich with his belt. It's rare enough that we see any footage from Georgia on the channel. This would have been a great opportunity.

Also on 4.28, Piper agreed to meet Jack Brisco in a Mid-Atlantic title match on this show. I don’t know if that match actually took place or not. The two would later meet on a classic late June or early July program. That show should air in the next month or so. The complete match was part of a Roddy Piper DVD set released by the WWE, so I feel confident they have that entire show. There is some classic interplay between Piper, Wahoo, referee Stu Schwartz, and Bob Caudle leading up to the match, and the match itself is a classic.

Interview – Jack Brisco. Brisco talks about Roddy Piper whipping Tommy Rich with a belt on an episode of Georgia Championship Wrestling and says Rich will get his revenge soon.

Confrontation with Roddy Piper, who brings Brisco a mini-teepee he bought in the airport in Pittsburgh. Piper says he wears a kilt and is proud of his Scottish heritage, but Brisco doesn't appear to be proud of his American Indian heritage becasue he doesn't wear feathers and isn't a chief. "I know you're not good enough to be a chief, don't get me wrong now..."

Brisco complains that Piper won't give him a Mid-Atlantic title shot. Piper promises Brisco a Mid-Atlantic title match next week.

Also, Bob Caudle says that next week they will show the tape from Georgia Championship Wrestling where Piper whips Tommy Rich with a belt, and will also have a taped message from Tommy Rich.

[ ] Wahoo McDaniel & Don Muraco defeat Carl Fergi and Bill White when Muraco pins Fergi following an inverted piledriver.

Interview – Don Muraco and Wahoo McDaniel (Muraco says there are alot of guys snickering in the back about his past reputation. Says he's never turned his back on a friend.)

Back off of 6-month Hiatus

We're back after a six-month hiatus working on other projects, and as always, the Mid-Atlantic Gateway. I plan to catch-up the MACW shows that have aired since out last update which was the 4/21/82 show that aired on WWE Classics on Demand back in September. They are currently in mid-June of 1982, so I have about two months worth of shows to get updated.

The next show up on the On Demand channel is scheduled to be the 6/21/82 episode, described on the Comcast website as you see below. Looks like a good one! The next show we'll update here is the 4/28/82 episode. We'll get caught up quickly after that.

Notes:
• I always thought Muraco clearly telegraphed his turn (which would come a few weeks later) when he said in his first interview in the territory that he would never turn his back on a friend.
• Jack Brisco points out that he and Jerry are happy that the Eastern finals are to be held in Charlotte becasue they won the qualifying tournament in Charlotte.
• Piper is excellent on color commentary.
• Mosca mentions that he and Kiler Kahn won the tournament in Montreal Quebec. Ole mentions that he and Stan Hanson has won two tournaments, one in Greensboro and the other in Atlanta.
• Jeez, Sarge wrestled super stiff in his match with Tony Anthony. Huge Johnny Valentine-like forarm smashes across the chest of Anthony and a brutal clothesline.
• Terry Taylor wears a very cool looking "Georgia Championship Wrestling" t-shirt in his interview.
• And speaking of t-shirts, Muraco has a funny one on that says "Patience, my ass. I'm gonna kill somebody."

The show opens with Bob Caudle, Johnny Weaver, and Ray Stevens at the podium telling us what is on tap for this episode of MACW. Jake Roberts joins them and comments on the situation in the area with Ole, Hansen, Piper, and Slaughter. He issues a challenge to Slaughter.

Our opening match is Ivan Koloff against Ron Ritchie. Johnny explains that for the first 10 minutes of the match, Koloff's TV title is on the line. Ritchie puts up a good fight and Ivan is DQ'd after shoving the referee, a young Bill Alfonso.

Next match is Jimmy Valiant vs Bill White. Valiant gets the win,and then he and Koloff brawl in the ring after Ivan interferes.

Next is a promo with Bill Ward for the MACW bumper stickers,and we also get promos for Lansing,MI with Mid-Atlantic champion Roddy Piper discussing his upcoming match with Dusty Rhodes.

Back in the studio our next match is tag-team action Terry Taylor and Tim Horner going up against David Patterson and Carl Fergie. David Crockett and Roddy Piper join Bob for commentary during the match. Fergie and Patterson get the win with a Fergie neckbreaker on Horner.

Back at the podium Steamboat, Youngblood, and Mulligan Jr. join Bob to discuss current happenings in the area. All 3 are happy with Jimmy Valiant's actions earlier in the show. Steamboat wants Slaughter and the US title.

After a break, Jake Roberts joins Bob to discuss the Brisco brothers and then we get to see the Brisco's on tape in tag action against David Patterson and Bill White. The Brisco's get the win with the figure four.

Bill Ward is back for another promo for Lansing, MI. Ray Stevens joins Bill to discuss his upcoming match with Buzz Sawyer.

Back in the studio, Sgt. Slaughter joins Bob for an interview. He let's Jake Roberts know that he is ready to step into the ring with Roberts anytime,anywhere.

Ole Anderson and Stan Hansen are next in tag-team action,with Gene joining them at ringside. Piper joins Bob on commentary. Austin Idol makes an appearance at ringside with his 8mm camera during the match. Ole and Stan get the victory after a vicious lariat clothesline from Hansen.

At the podium, Ole, Gene and Stan join Bob and discuss Valiant, and they are not happy at all with the "Boogie Man". Austin Idol then joins Bob to discuss his 8mm camera and his quest for the world title. Next,Ivan Koloff joins Bob and also discusses Valiant and says he will finish off Valiant "one way or another".

Bob says "so long for now".

Fayetteville's Champions

Regional NWA tag tournaments were being held all in lots of cities during the late winter and early spring of 1982. These were to fill the vacancy in the championships when Ole and Gene Anderson were stripped of the titles.

On the episode of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling taped 3/3/82, Roddy Piper and Bob Caudle mention that Jim Nelson and Don Kernodle won a tournament held in Fayetteville NC. Piper evens refers to Nelson and Kernodle as "Fayetteville's Champions".

That tournament was held two days before that TV taping, on 3/1 at the Cumberland County Memorial Arena. The newspaper ad for that show is seen here.

Flair, who had begun to leave the ringside area, returns to aid Steamboat. Sarge and crew throw Steamboat out of the ring and then triple team Flair whipping him with their belts and eventually knocking him unconscious. Steamboat returns with a chair to clear the ring, and then lifts an unconscious Flair into his arms and carries him to the back.

Steamboat talks about losing a close friend in Don Kernodle, and what it meant to have a friend stand up for him the way Ric Flair had in Greensboro, saving him from Slaughter and his Marine recruits.

- Piper and Caudle discuss the fact that NWA tag tournaments are being held over the area and that Nelson and Kernodle won the tournament in Fayetteville NC. That specific tournament had been held just two days earlier, 3/1/82 in Fayetteville. When pitching to Caudle for the shows final interview with the Privates, Piper calls Nelson and Kernodle “Fayetteville’s champions!”
- Annoying habit of the WWE editors, they have eliminated the traditional “Let’s take time for this commercial message for the Mid-Atlantic wrestling events coming up in your area” message that would air just before cutting away to the local promo spot segments. For anyone who regularly watched these programs in the 1970s and 1980s, this is like a needle skipping on your favorite 45 rpm record it’s so distracting.
- Music changes: WWE replaces Boogie’s music “Boy from New York City” with their canned theme for Jimmy Valiant.

WWE 24/7 did not present the show taped 2/10/82. While we don't have detailed notes on that show, we do know the following appeared on the show: Jake Roberts and Jay Youngblood, Ivan Koloff, Blackjack Mulligan Jr., Ole Anderson and Stan Hansen, plus woman wrestler Joyce Grable.

Videos also were shown of Tommy Rich, Killer Kahn (from the WWF), the Brisco brothers (from Florida), and Bob Armstrong (from Georgia).

The show also featured video from the Omni in Atlanta in June 1981 where Dusty Rhodes deeated Hartley Race for the NWA world title, used to promote Dusty's return to the area to challenge Sgt. Slaughter for the U.S. championship in Greensboro on 2/21/82.

Rare 1966 Mid-Atlantic Segment

On a recent edition of the Legends Roundtable on WWE Classics On Demand, a rare clip from Crockett Wrestling aired from 1966. The roundtable topic was "Patriotism" and the panelists were discussing great foreign heels. Jim Ross was giving some background info on Boris Malenko when they broke away to show a roughly 1:40 clip from All-Star Wrestling in 1966 from the WRAL-5 studios in Raleigh featuring host Bob Caudle interviewing Boris Malenko and the Missouri Mauler who was the Southern Heavyweight Champion at that time.

Before you get too excited about some old WRAL footage existing from that far back (as I briefly did), the explanation for the existence of the clip is that it actually came from a broadcast of Championship Wrestling from Florida. The interview was taped at WRAL and sent for airing on Florida TV. Malenko and Mauler were heading to Florida for Mauler to defend the Southern title against "Big O" Bob Orton.

A wonderful clip to have none-the-less, and especially cool to see that version of the Southern Heavyweight title belt which Mauler actually won in Florida and brought to the Charlotte territory (as explained to us by our friends at WrestlingMemories.com.)

The Rogers Report

The show opens with Bob and David telling us about the upcoming show. Sgt. Slaughter joins the two with some thoughts and is interrupted by Sandy Scott concerning the cobra clutch challenge. Scott says the $1,000 will be put up today in the challenge. Slaughter is not happy about Scott's decision, but Scott states the decision is final.

First match is Blackjack Mulligan Jr. and Jake Roberts vs Mike Miller and Charlie Fulton in tag action. Good physical match with Roberts getting the pin with the backbreaker and knee lift.

Our next match is Billy Robinson vs Tony Anthony.Robinson gets the win with the backbreaker.

Next are promos for WIHT-TV in Ann Arbor,MI. Austin Idol makes some comments. Ivan Koloff also comments on "looking forward to invading Ann Arbor". Roddy Piper says it it great being on TV in Ann Arbor.

Back in the studio, our next match is NWA TV Champion Ivan Koloff vs. Keith Larsen. Koloff gets the win after driving Larsen's head into the mat from the top rope. Sandy Scott discusses with Bob the situation with Paul Jones and the Ninja and Gene Anderson.

Johnny Weaver joins Bob to discuss Steamboat and Piper, and the opportunity for Steamboat to get his hands on Piper during the Battle Royal matches. Ray Stevens joins Bob to discuss Ole Anderson. Stevens still has the tag belt and tells Ole when he comes around he is "going to kick Ole's can like it has never been kicked before".

Next match is NWA Rookie of the Year Terry Taylor vs Tony Russo. During the match, Sandy Scott tells Bob and David that a drawing was held in the back and Blackjack Mulligan Jr. will get the shot at Slaughter's $1,000 cobra clutch challenge later in the program. Taylor gets the win with the flying forearm.

More promos for TV in Ann Arbor. Ray Stevens, Johnny Weaver, and Jimmy Valiant comment on MACW being on the Michigan TV station.

Back in the studio, we see Mid-Atlantic Tag champs Ox Baker and Carl Fergie getting a win over Don Kernodle and Vinnie Valentino.

Next is our cobra clutch challenge with Mulligan Jr. going after Slaughter's $1,000. Sarge goes into the stall again and then drops a hard elbow on Jr. while he is seated in the chair. Scott tells Sarge if he does it again, he will be fined more than a $1,000. Sarge slaps on the clutch and Jr. puts up a big fight to break it. David says "No, we can't be....",but we are out of time and the credits start to roll. TV time runs out while the challenge is still going on.

The Rogers Report

The show opens with Bob and David telling us what's on tap for this weeks episode, including an appearance by European heavyweight champion Billy Robinson. US champion Sgt Slaughter joins them at the podium to remind everyone he still has the cobra clutch challenge going for the $1,000. Bob reminds Sarge that Jay Youngblood wants to accept the challenge, but Sarge blows it off.

Our opening match is tag-team action with Blackjack Mulligan Jr and Jake Roberts vs Charlie Fulton and Chris Markoff. Mulligan Jr gets the win with the bulldog.

Our next match is the Ninja,with manager Gene Anderson,taking on Mike Davis. Ninja uses the Anderson style of working on one part of the body and dominates Davis throughout. He gets the pin with the headbutt from the second rope.

Our next match is Terry Taylor in action vs Mike Miller. Bob reminds us that Taylor is the Rookie of the Year. Blackjack Mulligan joins Bob during the match to comment on Slaughter's cobra clutch challenge and how he could use that $1,000 in the Mulligan household. Jack is impressed with Taylor in the ring. David then tells Blackjack that Sarge is going to demonstrate the cobra clutch later in the program.Taylor gets the pin with the flying forearm.

Next we have promos for WIHT-TV in Ann Arbor, MI featuring Sgt Slaughter and Pvt. Nelson.

Back in the studio, our next match is Jimmy Valiant vs Tony Russo.Valiant gets the win.Back at the podium, Rick Steamboat and Paul Jones join Bob to discuss the Ray Stevens situation. We then see film of Steamboat in a match from WWW in which Piper attacks Steamboat after the match. Ole Anderson joins Piper in beating down Steamboat. Ray Stevens hits the ring and makes the save. Back at the podium, Jones says he trusts Stevens and Steamboat says he appreciates the help from Stevens. Jake Roberts joins them and says that Ole is the hunted now.

Back from break,and Big John Studd is with Bob at the podium, and he has some harsh words for Blackjack Mulligan and all the "rednecks" who idolize Mulligan. Piper comes in and comments on his feud with Ricky Steamboat and reminds us he is still the champion.

Back in the ring, our next match is European champion Billy Robinson taking on Don Kernodle. A good match with Kernodle putting up a good fight, but Robinson gets the win with the backbreaker across the knee.

Slaughter joins Bob at the podium and explains the cobra clutch.He then invites Bob into the ring with he and Nelson as he gives us a demonstration using the move on Tony Anthony. He locks it in and will not break the hold. Youngblood, Roberts, and Taylor hit the ring and Sarge and Nelson bolt.

More local promos for WIHT-TV in Ann Arbor, MI. Jay Youngblood says he is looking forward to coming to Michigan. Porkchop Cash and Jake Roberts comment also.

Back in the studio, our next match is new Mid-Atlantic tag-team champions Carl Fergie and Ox Baker in action against Keith Larsen and Jay Youngblood. Fergie gets the pin on Larsen after Ox nails Larsen with the heart punch.

At the podium, Paul Jones says Slaughter's actions were totally uncalled for. Youngblood also joins Bob and comments on Slaughter and his clutch challenge and says he will get that $1,000. Roberts and Mulligan Jr join Bob and say they are looking forward to tagging alot more and anyone that wants a shot at them,to bring it on.

Bob Caudle interviews U.S. Champ Sgt. Slaughter as Pvt. Jim Nelson stands at attention.

Referee Sonny Fargo raises the hand of Ricky Steamboat.

Steamboat and Roddy Piper brawl in the ring. Moments later Ole Anderson and Ray Stevens would join the fray.

Mid-Atlantic Champion Roddy Piper says he will be ready to meet Ricky Steamboat in Marion VA.

Ray Stevens tells Ole Anderson that if he wants the other half of the tag belts, he'll have to go through him to get it.

Johnny Weaver talks about his upcoming tag match in Marion VA with partner Ray Stevens against Gene Anderson and the Ninja.

Jay Youngblood accepts the $1000 challenge to break Sgt. Slaughter's cobra clutch.

When Slaughter tries to back out of the challenge, NWA official Sandy Scott warns him he will strip him of the US title unless he gets in the ring with Youngblood.

Slaughter almost has the cobra locked in before backing out of it again.

The Rogers Report

Bob and David open the show with today's lineup.They are joined by Sgt Slaughter and Pvt Nelson. Sarge has a $1,000 check for anyone that can break the cobra clutch. He lays down the challenge to all the big names. Sarge has Nelson give him 20 push-ups and says he "demands respect" from everyone.

Opening match is Ricky Steamboat vs Charlie Fulton. Sandy Scott joins Bob and David during the match and comments on the $1,000 cobra clutch challenge. Bob asks Sandy about the new stars that Sandy is working to bring in. In the ring Fulton is giving Steamboat a battle. Steamboat ends up getting the win with the surfboard.

Next match is NWA TV champion Ivan Koloff defending the belt against Jim Gray. As Bob says Ivan "mauls" Gray and gets the win.

Local promos next for Roanoke,VA and Marion,VA. Gene Anderson comments on the upcoming match in Marion for his man the Ninja. Piper then comments on his match in Marion against Steamboat.

Back in the studio, Bob and David comment on Ray Stevens and we see a tape of a match from World Wide Wrestling with Rich Landrum of Ricky Steamboat taking on Mike Prater. Piper comes to ringside to taunt Steamboat. Steamboat gets the win and then Piper hits the ring and he and Steamboat get into a brawl. Ole Anderson comes in, nails referee Sonny Fargo, and then Piper and Ole double team Steamboat. Ray Stevens hits the ring to help Steamboat, and they clear the ring. Back in the studio, David and Bob comments on the the incident.

Next match is Ray Stevens vs Mike Prater. Prater attacks Stevens before Ray can get his jacket off and Stevens ends up getting the win with a piledriver while still wearing his jacket. At the podium, Ray joins Bob and says "when he tells you he is going to do something,you can take it to the bank, be it beating someone up or being someone like Ricky Steamboat's tag team partner". Ray says that Gene's "twitch" is due to Ole "sacrificing" him. Ray tells Ole he still has the tag belt and for Ole to come get it if he is man enough.

Next match is Jimmy Valiant in action. Valiant gets the win with the elbow. More local promos for Roanoke,VA 2/20/82 and Marion,VA 2/16/82. Johnny Weaver comments on his upcoming match in Marion and Steamboat then comments on his upcoming match with Piper in Marion.

Back in the studio,the next match is tag action with Slaughter and Nelson. Slaughter walks to the podium during the match and says "Nelson can handle these two guys by himself". Sarge also issues his cobra clutch challenge again to anyone and Jay Youngblood comes out to accept. Sarge says he has some other people that want to accept first and walks back to the ring. Youngblood says he is staying out there until Sarge accepts his challenge. Bob and David both comment and agree during the match about how they believe Ray Stevens can now be trusted for sure. Sarge gets the win with the cobra clutch.

Back at the podium, Youngblood wants Slaughter to accept his challenge. Sarge says Youngblood has already had his chance and others more worthy, like Keith Larson, want their chance. Sandy Scott comes out and says Sarge will accept the challenge and for Sarge to "get in the ring" or be stripped of everything. Ole comes out and says no way Youngblood can win the $1,000. In the ring Sarge and Jay trade verbal shots then Sarge stalls and then goes to the podium and says we are out of time, maybe next week he will accept the challenge.

Bob says "So long for now".

Preview: Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Airdate 12/12/81

The WWE Classics On Demand schedule for May lists the next episode of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling to premier on Wednesday 5/13/09. WWE Classics always lists the taping date for the Mid-Atlantic shows, which were always Wednesday nights at WPCQ studios in Charlotte. The date they give for this show is 12/3/81 which is a Thursday night following the taping date of the show currently airing. At first glance this would appear to be an error. However, Crockett Promotions always took a two-week break before Christmas, and this meant no TV tapings during those two weeks as well. In the 1970s, they would start doubling up TV tapings in early December so that they would have enough shows to get them through the two week Christmas break. This may be the case here, although there really will be no way to verify that.

The show they list as being taped on 12/3 (and would have aired in most markets on Saturday 12/12/81) will feature in action: Ricky Steamboat, Ivan Koloff, Ray Stevens, Jimmy Valiant, and the team of Sgt. Slaughter and Pvt. Nelson. Your referee is Sonny Fargo. They will be driving the Ray Stevens babyface turn pretty hard on this show, so expect Ole Anderson and Roddy Piper to be involved.

The World Wide Wrestling show that was taped the same night (these are not airing on WWE Classics, regrettably) featured in action: Jay Youngblood, Ole Anderson & Roddy piper, The Ninja, Ricky Steamboat, and the team of Sgt. Slaughter & Pvt. Nelson.

Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Title Change Ignored

On Friday November 27, Johnny Weaver and Jay Youngblood defeated Nikolia Volkoff and Chris Markoff for the Mid-Atlantic tag team championship. I was expecting to see some acknowledgement of this on the Mid-Atlantic show taped the following Wednesday 12/2 (currently airing on WWE Classics), but in a big disappointment no announcement was made. You had to look quick, but as they came back from commercial break for the match between Jay Youngblood and Jeff Sword, you will see Jay removing the tag team title belt from around his waist and handing it to the ring attendant. This was the only indication there had been a title change.

Johnny Weaver was co-host of the World Wide Wrestling show with Rich Landrum, and I would bet that it was mentioned there. Still, I can't get over it not being acknowledged on the Mid-Atlantic show, especially with Jay appearing with the belt. The Russian team, managed by Lord Alfred Hayes, had held the Mid-Atlantic titles for 20 straight weeks.

The title change was acknowledged, however, on the 11/28 taping and airing of NWA Championship Wrestling taped in Knoxville Tennessee the morning after the change. See the video below. Complete details including photos can be found on the Johnny Weaver blog.

First Report: Mid-Atlantic Wrestling taped 12/2/81

The Rogers Report

This episode of MACW opens with Bob, David and Sandy Scott. Scott gives us an update on the World-Tag title situation and again lets us know the Caddy Tourney is coming.

Our opening match is Jake Roberts and Mulligan Jr. vs Tony Russo and Jerry Prader. Tommy Young is our referee today. Quick tags for Roberts and Mulligan Jr. We get the Anderson arm slam from Jr and the pin.

John Studd joins Bob at the podium and tells us he is ready and waiting for Mulligan. We see the clip of Studd slapping Jr. and Studd says "it has to hurt for a daddy to see his son get slapped." Studd is angry and wants Mulligan anywhere he can get him.

Studd then goes to the ring for his match and gets the submission win in dominating fashion.

Sandy Scott returns to the podium and tells Gene Anderson to stay out of the upcoming World-Tag title matches. He then begins to tell us about the Steamboat-Piper situation and Steamboat comes out with another bag of letters and Scott asks Piper to come out and join them. Piper is hot, and Scott says if Piper does not calm down, he will strip him of the Mid-Atlantic title. Scott pulls out a contract for Piper to sign to defend his title against Steamboat. Piper signs it and then leaves angrily. Steamboat then signs it and thanks all the fans for all the letters they sent in to make this match happen.

Sgt. Slaughter joins Bob and David at the podium to watch our next match featuring Pvt. Nelson vs Tim Horner. Sandy Scott comes out during the match and says a situation is developing in the back with Blackjack Mulligan. Jack then comes out and confronts Slaughter with some harsh words and then returns to the dressing room. Scott returns and says he is going to the back to try and cool off Mulligan. Horner gives Nelson all he wants, but Nelson gets the win with the clothesline.

Bob gives us the rundown on the card tonight at the Charlotte Coliseum. Sarge comes out and says he has dropped out of the Caddy tourney to take on Mulligan Jr. for the title. Ole comes in and hypes up the Caddy battle royal and tourney. Piper joins him and comments on the Caddy as well. Gene then comes in and Ole says he and Gene are leaving Charlotte with the Caddy.

Our next match is Jay Youngblood against Jeff Swords. A nice match with Swords getting in some good shots on Jay, but Youngblood gets the pin after a nice chop and elbow smash.

Roberts and Mulligan Jr. join Bob at the podium. Jr. says he wants the US title very bad and will face Sarge anywhere, anytime. Roberts wants to talk about Ole Anderson. Jake says either he has to go or the Wrecking Crew has to go. Blackjack joins them and says things are going to start picking up and he takes some verbal shots at Sarge and Studd.

In the ring we have tag action with Ole and Ray Stevens vs. Paul Jones and Buddy Landel. Gene Anderson joins Bob at the podium during the match and discusses the Tag title situation and Sandy Scott's rules. Jones and Landel dominate early with quick tags and some nice offense. Ole and Ray start to work on Landel "Anderson style". Landel finally gets the tag and Paul Jones goes to work. All four men get involved and Gene interferes by pulling Jones leg. Meanwhile, Ole and Stevens get into it after Ole throws Landel into Stevens with the "Gene sacrifice." Stevens gets the pin on Landel.

Ray is fighting mad and will not give Gene and Ole the World tag belt.

Bob then again reminds us about the big card in Charlotte. Paul Jones, Jake Roberts, and Steamboat join Bob to discuss the battle royal and tournament for the Caddy. Roberts says there is no friends in this deal. Mulligan Jr. then joins Bob to discuss his US title match against Sarge. He says he will win the US title from Slaughter.

Our next match is Carl Fergie vs Larry Hamilton. Fergie gets the win with the neckbreaker.

Ray Stevens joins Bob at the podium to discuss the Ole situation. Ray says "don't sacrifice me like you did your stupid brother." He says he has the tag belt and if Ole wants it, to come get it, but be prepared to have his butt kicked. He says nobody pushes Ray Stevens around.

WTBS October 1986: Magnum's Accident

It’s tough watching these WTBS shows currently airing on WWE Classics On Demand. These shows are from October 1986, the month Magnum TA had his career ending automobile accident. That was 23 and a half years ago.

The WWE classics channel has skipped the WTBS show that aired on Saturday 10/18/86. (**Update on 4/6: The 10/18/86 show did air after all this week.) This show gave a hint at the tragedy that had occurred, but wasn’t able to address it directly because it had been taped nearly a full week earlier on Sunday 10/12/86. Magnum’s accident was on Tuesday 10/14, which meant that the shows airing on TBS on Saturday would include Magnum in the ring and in interviews, which was extremely awkward for all involved as there was major news coverage of Magnum’s accident all over TV and newspapers during this time.

On the shows that aired on Saturday 10/18, WTBS placed a small graphic in the corner of the screen that said “Recorded October 12, 1986” during any segments that either featured Magnum TA or where he was mentioned in interviews or commentary. They were pushing an upcoming program between Magnum and “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin.

Here is a timeline of how that week played out:

Sunday October 12:
Crockett tapes three shows “Sunday Edition” which will air later that night; “Championship Wrestling” and “World Championship Wrestling” that will air the following Saturday 10/18

Tuesday October 14:
Magnum has his automobile accident in Charlotte

Wednesday October 15:
Crockett tapes the syndicated programs “NWA Pro Wrestling” and “World Wide Wrestling” in Columbia SC. These shows aired Saturday 10/18/86. A somber Bob Caudle and David Crockett announce on their respective shows that Magnum had been injured in an automobile accident and more information would be forthcoming. Keep in mind at this point the whole company was having to immediately move forward with these tapings a little over 24 hours after the accident. No one had any idea if Magnum would live at this point. In fact, it looked very grim.

Saturday October 18:
The NWA Pro and World Wide shows air with the news of Magnum’s accident. But on WTBS, their shows had been taped before the accident, resulting in the eerie scene of Magnum being seen on both the morning and afternoon shows. WTBS placed a small graphic in the corner of the screen that said “Recorded on 10/12” during any segments that either featured Magnum TA or where he was mentioned in interviews or commentary. They were pushing an upcoming program between Magnum and “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin.

Sunday October 19:
Crockett tapes TBS programming that Sunday morning, the first of which airs later that night on “WCW Sunday Edition.” Jim Crockett comes out and makes the announcement that Magnum TA Terry Allen (one of the few times Magnum’s real name was ever mention on Crockett TV up until that point) had been injured in an automobile accident and had broken the 5th vertebrae in his neck and was out of action for good. Tully Blanchard, and James J. Dillon had the uncomfortable task of appearing immediately afterwards and although they couldn’t completely break character, did acknowledge the accident and wished Magnum well before moving into the taped segment where the Horsemen jumped Dusty Rhodes in the Crockett Promotions office parking lots and break his hand.

Speaking of that famous incident, all these years later I’m still not sure what they were thinking when they opened the World Wide show with footage of James J Dillon in a car with a camera rolling waiting for a “small red sports car” to come by, and then they follow it on the highway. With news of Magnum’s accident all over the media, but few outside of the Charlotte area knowing many of the details, this opening clip made you think they were playing into the injury because at that point, you didn’t know they were following Dusty until the complete clip aired later in the show. As you first watch it you think it might be that they are playing it like they are following Magnum. It was really strange.

But nothing was more bizarre than what occurred on “World Championship Wrestling – Sunday Edition” that aired the Sunday evening before Magnum’s accident. Magnum’s opponent on that show was a masked wrestler named “The Grim Reaper”, and it was Magnum’s last match that aired on TBS. Thankfully he did not wrestle on the “Championship Wrestling” or “World Championship Wrestling” programs, although they showed the Greensboro incident where Dusty injures Blanchard’s leg with a chair and Magnum is involved in that. I remember what a strange feeling that was seeing that only days after the accident.

Gateway Notes on MACW 11/25/81

It's nice to have this next show in sequence as WWE Classics On Demand gets rolling with the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling episodes. However, this experience will also force me to learn to have a little patience as, at least at this point, a new show is airing only once a month. Perhaps they will step those up in frequency over time.

Some perspective on this show:

There were some awkward moments early in the show transitioning between segments. It seemingly took forever for the production crew to get up to speed after the move to the WPCQ studios in Charlotte from WRAL in Raleigh. WPCQ was a small station and a small operation overall and didn't do much production on the level of a "live" wrestling show. Usually you noticed this during transitions between segments going from interviews to matches or introductions. Things were pretty awkward getting started this week, apparently due to the wrestlers being late getting to the ring for the opening match. David Crockett was noticeably aggravated over that. During those nervous moments, Bob Caudle mentioned US champion "Bob" Slaughter, one of the very few times Slaughter's real first name was heard on MACW TV.

"The big dog's back in town..." Blackjack Mulligan made his return to the area after spending most of his time in the Knoxville territory that was closely affiliated with Jim Crockett Promotions. Blackjack's interview on the show perfectly illustrated why he was so good at connecting with wrestling fans there, a relationship that had been well cultivated over the years.

David Crockett mentions that European Champion Billy Robinson and Ray "The Crippler" Stevens will be coming to the area soon. (I always loved it when they kept us up to date on who we'd be seeing in the area soon.)

If the segment with Slaughter and Piper reviewing films of Tommy Rich and Angelo Mosca looked similar to the segment last week (11/18/81 show), it's because it was indeed almost identical. The segment shown here was from the previous week's World Wide Wrestling show with Rich Landrum, which was formatted identically to the segment on the same week's Mid-Atlantic show.

Sgt. Slaughter's new recruit Pvt. Jim Nelson made his debut in the ring under the guidance of the Sarge. Both booker Ole Anderson and Slaughter were very high on the young wrestler out of Roanoke VA. Nelson broke in to the major leagues when Anderson used him on TV in Georgia and then brought him to the Carolinas where he wrestled underneath for most of 1980s and 1981. Nelson certainly looked the part of a young Marine recruit!

The local promos for the Sunday-after-Thanksgiving show in Charlotte were done "live" in the studio with Bob Caudle. In all other markets, fans were seeing pre-taped promos for their towns.

During the tag match with Ole Anderson and Roddy Piper, David Crockett explains that Gene Anderson is injured and the NWA needs to make a decision soon on the disposition of the title. Over the next several weeks Ole would take several different partners including Piper, Ray Stevens, Jim Nelson, and others. The match on this show was fascinating for an old Anderson fan like myself because Piper worked the match with Ole in exactly the same fashion that Ole and Gene would work a match, working over the arm and eventually getting the submission. Roddy even did the trademark "Anderson slam" (the hammerlock slam).

The Rogers Report

The show opens with Bob and David telling us what's in store for this week on MACW. Our opening match is tag-team action featuring the great Blackjack Mulligan and Jake Roberts vs Nikolai Volkoff and Charlie Fulton. Good action throughout with Volkoff bodyslamming Mulligan at one point. This match reminds of how quick and agile Roberts was back then. Mulligan gets the pin after the claw and bodyslam.

Postmatch interview with Bob and Mulligan. Blackjack says he's been doing some work down on the farm, but the big dog is now back. Jack comments on the top talent that has come into the area.

Bob then cuts to a taped interview with Rich Landrum and Sandy Scott talking about that great talent and Sandy tells us we have a 1982 Cadillac to entice more top talent into the area. Sgt. Slaughter interrupts the interview and states he is # 1 in the world, not just the Mid-Atlantic area and he wants that Caddy. Sandy then tells the Sarge to take a look at this tape of Tommy Rich. We see Rich in action vs Tony Russo while Sarge and Sandy discuss the match and who is coming into the area. Sarge says he will wrestle 5 men at one time for that 82 Caddy. Sarge says he has an open contract to anyone that wants a shot at the US title. Roddy Piper joins Slaughter and says he would like that Caddy as well. Rich gets the win. Roddy says Rich does not impress him at all. Sandy tells Sarge and Roddy he has another tape he wants to show them of another top wrestler coming in-Angelo Mosca. Piper and Sarge seem surprised that Mosca is coming. We then see Mosca in action from up north with Vince McMahon on commentary. Mosca destroys his opponent. Sarge then says Mosca will go down like all the others.

Back in the studio, Bob and Blackjack talk more about the Caddy and all the tough competition that stands in the way of getting it. We then see a tape of Blackjack being slapped by John Studd. Jack says Studd will pay.

Bob then reminds us of the great card coming up Thanksgiving weekend at the Charlotte Coliseum with Ric Flair defending the title against Ray Stevens. We then see a tape of Ric commenting on this upcoming match and Ric tells Stevens it's going to be a long night for him and if Ole sticks his nose in, a long night for him as well.

Back in the studio Mulligan comments on his match that night in Charlotte against Studd and then Steamboat and Roberts come out and comment on their match that night as well.

Back from break and Bob has the Sarge at the podium for an interview. Sarge says he is offering $1000 to anyone that can break his cobra clutch. Sarge then introduces the next match with his protege Pvt. Jim Nelson vs Keith Larsen in the studio. Sarge says he has trained him to be a vicious and tough wrestler. Sarge gets some cheap verbal shots in on Wahoo during the match. Nelson gets the win with the cobra clutch.

Back from break Bob has Steamboat at the podium. Rick has a huge bag with him and says he is doing all he can to get Piper in the ring. He then reveals that the huge bag is 1 of 3 he has received this week with mail of fans wanting to see Steamboat vs Piper. He says Piper continues to ignore the challenge and he tells the fans to keep the letters coming and he will continue to take the bags of letters and dump them on Jim Crockett's desk until he gets the title match.

Next studio match is the Ninja with Jim Holliday against Vinnie Valentino. Holliday joins Bob and David at the podium to discuss the Ninja and how great he is. Ninja gets the win.

Bob then reminds us again of the big Thanksgiving weekend card on Sunday at the Charlotte Coliseum. 7 big matches in all. Sarge joins Bob to discuss his match against Mulligan Jr. in Charlotte. Ole then comes in to say that Stevens is taking the World Title from Flair that night. Ole invites Piper out and they discuss their match coming up in Charlotte against Steamboat and Roberts.

Back from break and we have tag team action with Ole and Piper against Tony Anthony and Don Kernodle. David reminds us that Gene Anderson is injured and has been going to matches with Ole, but not getting into the ring and defending their World Tag titles. David says that the tag titles have to be defended and the NWA will have to do something about this. Ole and Piper work well as a team with Piper using the Anderson technique of working on one part of the body. He and Ole continuously work on Anthony's arm until he submits. Piper and Ole destroy Kernodle and Anthony in the ring afterwards and go back to working on Anthony's arm. Steamboat and Roberts hit the ring and Bob says "we have a wild melee in the ring now".

Ole and Piper leave the ring in a hurry. Steamboat and Roberts join Bob at the podium and they say are coming after Ole and Piper. Bob tells us "so long for now".

2nd Big Show Debuts tomorrow

The 2nd in-sequence episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling will premier tomorrow (Wednesday 3/18) on the WWE Classics On Demand cable channel. The show was originally taped November 25, 1981. We'll have a "First Report" posted here hopefully on Thursday.

The April schedule has begun popping up on some cable system websites. The next scheduled Mid-Atlantic show is the 12/2/81 episode which will be available on 4/15/09 on the channel.

In an unrelated note, it was a pretty cool moment on Monday Night Raw this week, as four top stars in Mid-Atlantic Wrestling from the late 70s and early 80s all appeared together. Ric Flair, Jimmy Snuka, Ricky Steamboat, and Roddy Piper were all there together, shoulder to shoulder, for a brief moment. It was like a 1980 Mid-Atlantic Wrestling reunion. All four held the United States championship during that time, and three of the four were Mid-Atlantic champs as well.

On Monday Night Raw (3/16/09), Ric Flair made an appearance and brought out some of his old pals from his Mid-Atlantic Wrestling days.

For a brief moment Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, Ric Flair, and Ricky Steamboat all stood shoulder to shoulder on the RAW stage. It made for a really cool moment for Mid-Atlantic fans who will remember that all four were top stars together for Jim Crockett Promotions in the late 1970s and early 1980s. All four were United States heavyweight champion, Flair losing and winning it to all the other three at one time or another. Three of the four (Flair, Piper, and Steamboat) were Mid-Atlantic champions as well.

This show was taped at WPCQ the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving and aired in the major markets on 11/28/01. Here is a preview of the 11/25/81 episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling that will air on WWE Classics On Demand on March 18.

Notes on The Show:
Despite the build-up on last weeks show, Wahoo McDaniel suddenly departs the territory leaving Blackjack Mulligan Jr. and Jay Youngblood as the top contenders for Sgt. Slaughter's U.S. championship. In an angle to push Youngblood, he breaks the cobra hold of Pvt. Jim Nelson, but is unable to break the cobra hold of the Sarge.

Johnny Weaver and Jay Youngblood are the new Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions, defeating the Russian team of Nikolia Volkoff and Chris Markoff managed Lord Alfred Hayes. This was announced on NWA Professional Wrestling airing on WBIR in Knoxville which was taped the same morning as it aired on 11/28/81. The MACW taping has already taken place on Wed. 11/25, so it would not be covered by MACW until the taping on 12/2.

Live Studio Interviews In Place of Local Promos

As was discussed earlier on this blog, the 11/18/81 edition of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling that aired on WWE Classics On Demand included the inserted local promos for the Roanoke market. Something many fans may not know is that those local promos are actually inserted on top of other interviews that were recorded live right there in the studio as the show was being taped. There were a small number of TV markets for the Crockett shows that did not have a local promo insert on certain weeks, and a few that did not have them at all when Crockett Promotions wasn't running shows in that viewing market. Examples include some TV markets in Florida and West Virginia where Mid-Atlantic Wrestling was being carried.

In place of those interviews were generic interviews conducted right there in the studio. These were what we saw in the earlier MACW shows that have aired on the On Demand channel over the last couple of years. For example:

(1) On the MACW 9/1/82 show, the two 2:20 minute local promo slots were filled with two additional interviews with Kelly Kiniski and Sir Oliver Humperdink.

(2) On the MACW 12/8/82 show, Ric Flair and Greg Valentine did a classic interview in one of those promotional slots, Flair especially was on fire joking about North Carolina's basketball woes, Don Kernodle and other things going on. You can tell this interview was aimed at the Florida market, as Flair talked about Miami, West Palm Beach, and Tampa, and what he and Valentine would do to Dusty Rhodes if they caught him in the state of Florida. Rhodes was not wrestling in the Mid-Atlantic territory then; he was the booker in Florida.

(3) On the MACW 3/12/83 show, Paul Jones and Dory Funk Jr. also do one of these promos aimed at the Florida market, including some very funny comments aimed at Rhodes.

One of the really cool things about seeing these "live" segments (as opposed to the promotional inserts) is seeing interviews that we would never have seen otherwise. However, given the choice, I'd hope to see the local promos in these future shows that air on WWE Classics On Demand.

The frustrating thing going here with the WWE airing these shows, is that during the fall of 1986 the WTBS Football Scoreboard show was using the TBS studios for their live Scoreboard inserts to their programming throughout the day and the studio was not available for the wrestling tapings which were normally taped on Saturdays. Prior to the football season, Crockett taped the "first run" Saturday night show first that same morning, then the Saturday morning hour that would air the following week.

When the football season started, Crockett had to move tapings to Sunday morning. Unlike a year earlier in the fall of 1985, when they would tape the following Saturday's two shows in order a week ahead of time, they decided to drop Sunday's "Best of Championship Wrestling" show and instead air a fresh hour of studio wrestling taped that same Sunday morning, to keep their TV from being a week behind. So they created a new show - "World Championship Wrestling Sunday Edition" which was taped that same morning. Right after it had taped they taped "Championship Wrestling" which would air the following Saturday morning, and then finally "World Championship Wrestling" which would air the following Saturday night.

As a result, the Saturday show for the fall became almost non-eventful, as all the big announcements and angles had already aired the past Sunday and even now on Saturday mornings. This show is a good example, it sort of has the feel of an old "Championship Wrestling" Saturday morning show, not a lot going on, just going through the motions of standard TV matches and interviews. They do replay the angle with the Midnights and the Road Warriors from that mornings show, since the audience for the Saturday AM show was much smaller.

My whole point of going through all that is that we unfortunately for the next several months will see what can best be described as the TBS "C" show, at least until the football season is over. I don't know why they would show the Sunday show instead except that perhaps they are only going through the tapes of Saturday shows at this point. Maybe someday we will see the "Sunday Edition" show on Classics On Demand, because for the fall shows, at least, those are much better shows.

WWE Classics On Demand will air the next Saturday night show, airdate 9/27/86, next week on 2/18 and we will provide the match and interview details on that show as well at that time. On the two TBS shows that air before it that we don't get to see, Wahoo McDaniel brawls with Nikita Koloff to help set the table for their title unification match in the Omni that weekend, and Ric Flair has a confrontation with Dick Murdoch.

An odd situation involving Wahoo McDaniel. Wahoo had what I remembered at the time (based on my notes) a "shoot" interview a week or so earlier than this taping, talking about not getting the matches he wanted, and how Sgt; Slaughter was US champion becasue he won a tournament that Wahoo wasn't in. Sounds like a work, I know, but what folowed made me think maybe not. Slaughter makes a challange to Wahoo on this show, and it certainly looked like they were building to a Sarge vs. Wahoo program, but it turned out Wahoo would suddenly leave the area for several months, and was actually gone before this show was taped, not returning until the spring of 1982 with partner Don Muraco during the world tag team title tournement. Later in the show Youngblood says he'll sign the contract with Slaughter, making it appear they knew Wahoo was gone, but all during the show Bob and David kept talking about Sarge's challenge to Wahoo. Very odd, because it was never going to happen to begin with.
The Jimmy Valiant match came off as a little awkward on this tape becasue they have edited out Boogie's theme music, so it sort of began in progress, and awkwardly broke back to the set right after the pin.
Bob and David make a cool reference to the Andersons when Roberts and Steamboat do the Anderson "block and tackle."
Steamboat and Roberts made an excellent team on this show, and the match with Super D and the Grappler was excellent on all four guys. I had forgotten how great Roberts was at this point in his career.
They show a match taped a month or so earlier at the Charlotte Park Center between a visiting Tommy Rich from Georgia and Tony Russo. You briefly see the regular ring announcer for the Charlotte Coliseum in this clip, C.J. Underwood. Underwood was also a television personality for WBTV-3 in Charlotte.

Questions on Roanoke Promos Answered

I've just had a chance to quickly review the 11/18/81 MACW episode (review coming later tonight) and can clear up a few things related to the Roanoke promos seen on this show.

At the beginning of the first local promo segment, the announcer says "a lot of action going on in the Bluefield WV area, and in our sister state in Roanoke VA..."

This pretty much confirms that the tape WWE has was one that aired in the Bluefield WV market on WHIS (now WVVA) channel 6. It still isn't clear why the two dates are so far removed, but we may get a clearer picture of that when I locate dates for Roanoke shows around that time period.

As we learned earlier from Carroll and Kyle, the NWA Professional Wrestling show out of Knoxville (a separate territory, but closely affiliated with Jim Crockett Promotions) had taken the traditional MACW time slot on channel 10 in Roanoke and the events in Roanoke were under their banner at this time, even though they were often headlined by Mid-Atlantic talent.

It will be interesting to see if we will get more local promos in the shows to come from the WWE Classics On Demand channel.

Time Lag on the Local Promos

One of the real surprises in the premier episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling that aired on WWE Classics On Demand this week was the inclusion of the local promos for the Roanoke VA market. In the first place, it is unusual (and in fact, might be a first) that the WWE kept the local promos in the program to begin with. None of the other territory programs that have aired regularly on the channel (World Class, Florida, old TBS shows, etc.) have include promos for the local events taking place at the time, nor have any of the three Mid-Atlantic Wrestling shows that have aired over the past years had them included. But secondly, the promos were for a show that took place over two months after the show originally aired in some markets.

This taping for this first show took place on 11/18/81, and yet these promos were for a show in Roanoke on 2/7/82. This would lead you to believe that the show aired much later than the first run week of 11/21/81 which is when it aired in the Raleight, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Richmond markets as well as perhaps a few others.

As we have learned, the tapes of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling were sent to several markets the weekend following the taping, and when those tapes were returned, they were sent to another set of markets. This was called "bicycling." (For a detailed look at this process, see Wednesdays In The Video Tape Room on the Mid-Atlantic Gateway.) From talking with long time fans who were watching Roanoke wrestling at the time (Kyle Rosser, Carroll Hall, and Jim Nelson to name a few), the MACW show that aired on WSLS channel 10 in Roanoke was two weeks behind its first run in the major markets. That would put the Roanoke airdate on 12/5/81, still two months out of the 2/7/82 show.

There is no way to know this for sure, so any discussion here is pure speculation, but I think it's possible this tape wasn't from the Roanoke market, but from a neighboring TV market in Virginia or West Virginia that was promoting the Roanoke show. This show would have had to have been way out on the edge of the "bicycle" wheel. It's really the only way to explain why promos for an event so far removed from the taping date were insert-edited into this tape (although I am open to other ideas.)

There were at least four tapes in the "bicycle" (as described by Tom Gallagher in the article linked above) and there were by this time a couple dozen markets for the show. It's possible that one of the tapes that came back at the end of the "bicycle" was kept for the video tape library, and that is what we are seeing on WWE Classics On Demand today.

First Report: Mid-Atlantic Wrestling taped 11/18/81

The Rogers Report

The show opens with Bob Caudle, David Crockett, and Sandy Scott. Scott promises to reveal an incentive later to bring more talent into the area.

First match is Jay Youngblood vs Ricky Harris. Youngblood looks smooth as always in getting the victory.

We then get an interview with an irate US Champion Sgt. Slaughter, joined by Pvt. Nelson. Sarge brings a tape for us to see of a Wahoo interview where the Chief calls the Sarge a coward. Back in the studio Sarge pulls out a contract to defend the title against "the fat indian" as Sarge calls Wahoo.

Sarge vs Ken Hall is our next match in the studio. Sarge calls out for Wahoo a few times during the match. Sarge gets the win with the cobra clutch.

Time for a local promo for Roanoke on Feb 7,1982 with an interview with Ivan Koloff,who will be taking on Jimmy Valiant in a no DQ match for Boogie's Cadillac. Koloff says he is going to take the Caddy and then watch Ric Flair destroy Blackjack Mulligan Jr. Sandy Scott is back with his incentive program of offering a 1982 Cadillac to get some of the talent in. Tommy Rich is mentioned and we get to see a taped match of Rich in action against Tony Russo with Ole Anderson at ringside. Rich gets the win with the Thesz press.

Roddy Piper, Ole Anderson, and the Sarge join Caudle and Scott back in the studio to discuss the Cadillac prize. Scott shows the 3 a tape of Angelo Mosca in action.

After a break we get an interview with Jake Roberts, Steamboat, and Youngblood. Jay wants the US title from the Sarge. Steamboat wants Piper and the Mid-Atlantic title. Jake wants Ole.

Our next studio match is Jimmy Valiant getting a very quick victory.

Piper joins Bob for an interview. Roddy has a tape of Steamboat in action against a masked man and Piper runs in and covers Steamboat for the pin with the masked man counting to 3. Back in the studio Steamboat comes to the ring and challenges Piper, who heads to the dressing room.

Time for another local promo for Roanoke on Feb 7 with an interview with Ray Stevens and Jay Youngblood discussing their tag match and then the Boogie Man discusses his match with Koloff.
Finally Mulligan Jr. discusses his title match with Ric Flair.

Back in the studio our next match is Steamboat and Roberts vs Super Destroyer and the Grappler. A good hard, physical match. Piper and Ole Anderson come to ringside and the great referee Sonny Fargo has his hands full. Piper and Ole get in the ring and fight it out with Jake and Steamboat,who get the win by DQ.

Jake and Steamboat join Caudle at ringside to discuss and show the rest of the tape Piper showed earlier in the show. Steamboat is hot and wants Piper badly.

Bob Caudle tells us "So long for now."

A very good episode with some nice action and some great hot interviews.

Local Promos from Roanoke Included!

Reports are coming in on the episode of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling that premiered today on WWE 24/7 (at least on the systems that have it so far; some systems still have not updated with the new content for the week.)

One of the big surprises was the inclusion of the two local promo inserts for the Roanoke market. It is of course unclear if this will continue, or may include different markets in the future, but for the many folks who found the local promos to be one of the most entertaining parts of the show, this is a welcome development.

To my knowledge, this is the first time the WWE has included the local promos in these regional shows, although they may have left them in some of the AWA shows. But I don't recall seeing any of them in the Florida or World Class shows that have aired.

While a more detailed report is forthcoming, we have learned that the promos dealt with the Cadillac tournament coming to Roanoke. See the preview for this show on this blog for more details about the Cadillac tournaments.

Sandy Scott comes out and presents the Mid-Atlantic titlebelt to Jack Brisco after his victory over Roddy Piper two days earlier inGreenville SC.

June 2, 1982 - Brisco/Jones Team

Jack Brisco teams up with good friend (and long timeadversary) Paul Jones. Jones was a frequent challenger for Brisco's NWA worldchampionship in 1974 and 1975. The two also feuded in Florida. Great tag matchwith Paul using the football tackles and indian deathlock for the win followinga textbook double arm suplex by Brisco.

June 9, 1982 - Brisco vs. Muraco

Jack Brisco wrestles Don Muraco. Brisco challenges Muraco atthe beginning of the program and Muraco accepts and the two have a good match.Roddy Piper does commentary. At the end, Muraco uses Brisco's signature holdagainst him as he applies the figure four leglock, but Brisco reverses the holdusing the same roll-over technique originally devised by Muraco in Florida inthe 1970s. Piper interferes and referee Sonny Fargo awards the decision toBrisco on a DQ. After the match Piper tries to take out Brisco with a steelchair, but Brisco ducks it in time. Brisco is then double teamed until PaulJones and Jimmy Valiant make the save.

June 30, 1982 - Piper has Brisco's belt
Jack Brisco isn't on this show, but Roddy Piper is with Jack's Mid-Atlantic title belt which he stole from Brisco during an earlier match. This leads up to Brisco and Piper's epic confrontation the following week.

July 7, 1982 - Roddy Piper defeats Jack Brisco to win the Mid-Atlantic title
In the best match of 1982 on TV (and there were many), Piper defeats Brisco under questionable circumstances to win the Mid-Atlantic title. Piper agrees to put the belt up (which isn't his to begin with) if Brisco will put up $10,000. because "the banks were closed on the holiday" brisco can't raise but $5000, so Ricky Steamboat and Wahoo McDaniel both pitch in $2500 each to help Brisco come up with the total of ten grand. Piper wins the match when he hits Brisco with a roll of coins and pins an unconscious Brisco in the center of the ring.

July 21, 1982 - Brisco/Steamboat team

Jack welcomes Ricky back from Japan, and says Steamboat willbe his tag partner in matches with Piper and Muraco, and Steamboat has hisback. They show some tape of recent events with Piper and the Briscos. Tapesare shown from recent TV of: (1) Piper injures Jerry Brisco (2) Piper attemptsto put Jack out with chair during his match with Muraco.

Brisco and Steamboat wrestle Matt Borne and Steve Seibert.Borne in particular has some great moments with both Steamboat and Brisco.

September 1, 1982 - Mid-Atlantic Title: Brisco vs. Jones
Against the better judgment of brother Jerry Brisco (making a special appearance) and friends Wahoo McDaniel and Ricky Steamboat, Jack Brisco defends the Mid-Atlantic title against Paul Jones managed by Sir Oliver Humperdink. Jones wins the match with illegal karate thrust into the throat of Brisco.

"I Don't Get WWE 24/7!"

Sadly, neither do I. And we're not alone.

In fact, most people don't. It is on a limited number of cable systems nationally, and not currently available on any other platform such as satellite or direct download via iTunes or anything like that. So far, it's a cable system service only. A customer service representative at Time Warner Cable in my area told me they had no immediate plans to carry the service because it was so expensive for them to carry (I took his meaning to be that the WWE wants a hefty fee for a system to be able to offer it.)

It is an interactive service, not a "channel" in the traditional sense. You select an offering off a menu on your interactive digital cable box, and then watch the program immediately as it "streams" to your set top box. I've read that some cable systems claim they don't have the bandwidth to offer it yet, but I don't really buy that.

It is a pay service, unlike most all other On Demand services currently available. In the current scheme, if you subscribe to the regular channel on your cable system (such as HBO for example), you get the On Demand version at no additional charge. The WWE 24/7 service requires the customer to pay an additional fee per month.

DirecTV now has its own On-Demand service, using it's DVR in tandem with a networked Internet connection in your home, via a router. They offer literally hundreds of obscure movies and cooking shows, etc., but no signs of adding the wrestling service.

What can we do? Complain to your service provider (politely) and repeatedly request that your local cable service, or DirecTV if you have that, add the WWE 24/7 Classics On Demand service.

Here is a preview of the 11/18/81 episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling that will debut on WWE 24/7 On Demand on February 4th.

WRESTLERS ON THE SHOW
Based on 28 year old notes that we have on this program, it looks like there will only be four matches on this show, which was very unusual for the Crockett shows at that time, which usually followed a strict format and usually had five matches.

The four matches involve the following wrestlers in this order:

• Jay Youngblood
• Sgt. Slaughter
• Jimmy Valiant
• Ricky Steamboat/Jake Roberts vs. Super Destroyer/Grappler

The apparent reason for only four matches being shown is that several video clips and arena films are shown on this program regarding wrestlers coming into the area, which took one of the match segments. (It is also possible that the main event tag match might have gone two segments, but I don't believe that to be the case.)

NOTES ON THE SHOW
• Sandy Scott serves as a special official for Jim Crockett Promotions organizing Cadillac Tournaments all around the area over the next few weeks. They will include all the regular wrestlers in the area as well as Tommy Rich (a Georgia Championship Wrestling regular) and Angelo Mosca (a WWWF regular) as well as others.
• Blackjack Mulligan and Blackjack Mulligan Jr. are getting a big push.
• Ole Anderson is the current #1 contender for Ric Flair's NWA World Championship that Flair won just two short months ago (9/17/81 in Kansas City.)

Mid-Atlantic Wrestling to Debut on Feb. 4

The first regular episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling to air on the WWE 24/7 On Demand channel debuts on February 4th. The show will apparently appear in sequence thereafter. February has only one show slated, but beginning in March they will probably air 2-3 shows a month like they have done with World Class Wrestling and 1980s World Championship Wrestling shows.

The first show was recorded on Wednesday night 11/18/81 in the studios of WPCQ television in Charlotte NC, at that time the regular home of Mid-Atlantic and World Wide Wrestling.

The show features Jake Roberts teaming with Ricky Steamboat to battle the Super Destroyer and the Grappler, plus Sgt. Slaughter and Roddy Piper.

This show aired in most Mid-Atlantic markets the Saturday before Thanksgiving 11/21/81. To get an idea of what was going on in the territory at that time, take a look at the Thanksgiving show that year.

There have been three other complete Mid-Atlantic episodes to air on WWE 24/7 in the past as part of various Hall of Fame tributes. We will have more information on those shows soon.
